Swedish subcontractor Nybergs Svets has secured its first major export order outside the Nordic region, according to Dagens industri. The Alingsås-based company will supply 1,500 tons of steel structures for a hospital construction project in Guyana. This strategic expansion aims to mitigate the impact of a slowdown in the Swedish construction sector by diversifying into new markets. Founded in 1914, Nybergs Svets currently employs approximately 50 people. CEO Patrik Wallin describes this move into exports as a "natural next step" for the business. The project involves the construction of a 230-bed general hospital in New Amsterdam, Guyana, a nation recognized by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as the world's fastest-growing economy. The new hospital will include three operating rooms, advanced X-ray technology, laboratories, and a pharmacy. The opportunity originated through Elof Hansson International AB, now part of Serneke International Group. Tasked with sourcing Swedish suppliers, Elof Hansson International facilitated financing from the Swedish Export Credit Agency (EKN) and the Swedish Export Credit Corporation (SEK). The agreement was finalized with an advance payment from the developer and a guarantee from EKN. According to Wallin, this project provides Nybergs Svets with invaluable experience, positioning the company to pursue similar international contracts in the future. This marks a significant evolution for the company, which previously only engaged in limited projects in Norway.
